What sets a Black stick apart from the other TEREA menthols?

It's colder, and honestly that's most of it. Philip Morris's Japanese site puts one line over the whole Black range: a strong, ice-cold menthol that cuts straight through. Then each stick gets its own smell on top. Black Menthol gets a faint green fruit. Black Purple gets rich blueberry. The Indonesian site uses the word frosty for the series and hangs berry or fruit on it. Think cold first and flavour second and the names make sense.

One thing we'd rather say early: on this page, strong is a word about cooling and taste, not nicotine. Nicotine figures aren't printed here; the pack and the live listing have them.

Which TEREA Black sticks can you buy in Dubai?

The last column is lifted from each product page.

One warning about sale units, because they differ here. Both Indonesia listings are 200-stick cartons, while the Japan listings go by the pack of 20, so look at the pack count on the product page before ordering. Expect Japanese or Indonesian printing on the box; inside is a normal TEREA stick.

Black Green or Black Menthol? Black Purple or Black Ruby?

People search for these two match-ups more than anything else, so here goes. Black Menthol has nothing to say beyond cold; a green-fruit note is in there somewhere, but you have to hunt for it. Black Green keeps a similar menthol hit and then lets a mellow tobacco base and a fresher green fruit show through, so if you want to still taste the leaf, Green is the one.

Between the two berries, Black Purple Menthol is blueberry, the maker's own word, on the Japan recipe. Black Ruby, from Indonesia, goes red instead: raspberry-led berry with a soft floral finish, and the Indonesian site tags it "frosty and red berry". Purple reads darker and rounder; Ruby reads brighter. Neither is sweet in the mouth. If you have tried Purple Wave Italy, which is forest fruit over a gentler menthol, Black Purple is the same idea with the cold turned well up.

If Black is too cold, where do you go?

Down a notch, then. The gentlest option we have is Turquoise Uzbekistan, light tobacco with menthol cooling and none of the frost; the rest of the Turquoise page is pitched about the same. Blue Indonesia sits roughly halfway to Black, deep menthol with peppermint and a soft creamy aroma behind it. If Black Green appeals but you'd like less bite, Green Indonesia is the same cool green mint on light tobacco without the frost. From Japan there's Mint Japan, where mint and tobacco share the stage, and Tropical Menthol Japan, menthol with a mango-like aroma on top.

Common questions

Which TEREA Black is the strongest?

No official strength number exists across the four, and we're not going to make one up. All four are strong menthol. If by strongest you mean the coldest with the least flavour in the way, that is Black Menthol. If you mean the fullest taste, Black Green has the most tobacco and Black Ruby the most fruit.

Is TEREA Black Ruby from Japan or Indonesia?

Ours is the Indonesia edition. Japan sells a Black Ruby Menthol too, described by IQOS Japan as strong cold menthol with a vivid raspberry aroma, but it is not on our shelves right now, so the listing you see here is Indonesian.

Does Black Green taste of tobacco?

It does, more than the other three. Once the cold has hit, a mellow tobacco base comes through with a light green fruit behind it. It is the Black to pick if you find Black Menthol a bit empty.

Will TEREA Black work in my IQOS?

Yes, if it's an ILUMA: the original ILUMA, ILUMA PRIME and ILUMA ONE, plus ILUMA i, ILUMA i ONE and ILUMA i PRIME, including the ILUMA i we sell. Blade devices such as IQOS 3 DUO won't heat a TEREA, and BLENDS A sticks for IQOS BONDS are a separate system.
