What Is IQOS ILUMA i, and How Does It Heat TEREA Without a Blade?
Quick answer: IQOS ILUMA i is a heated tobacco device that only takes TEREA sticks. It heats the tobacco with what IQOS calls the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM, so there’s no heating blade in the device and IQOS says no cleaning is needed. It comes as ILUMA i ONE, ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME.

What is IQOS ILUMA i?
It’s the current IQOS ILUMA range in the UAE, made for TEREA tobacco sticks and nothing else. You put a TEREA stick in, the device heats the tobacco, and you take the stick out when the session ends.
IQOS sells three versions. ILUMA i ONE is pocket sized and all in one piece. ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME come in two parts: a Holder for the stick and a Pocket Charger that tops the Holder up between sessions. PRIME is the dressier one, with an anodized aluminium body and a wrap around it.
The “i” models added a few things IQOS lists on its UAE range page: a Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff and Autostart. We go through what each one does further down.

How does SMARTCORE induction heat a TEREA stick?
IQOS says ILUMA heats the tobacco with its SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM, and that the stick and the device work as one system to keep the heating temperature right. The tobacco is heated, not burned.
Here’s the bit that surprises people. Each TEREA stick has a tiny metal piece sealed in it. It’s sharp. So don’t cut a stick open or swallow one. The device itself has no blade to push the stick onto.
IQOS doesn’t publish a step-by-step technical breakdown on its UAE pages, so we won’t invent one. What it does say is short and useful:
- No blade in the device.
- No cleaning necessary.
- Sticks are single use. Don’t put a used one back in.
- With Autostart on, heating begins when you insert the stick.
In practice you slide the stick in up to the filter line until the Holder vibrates. After the second vibration it’s ready. When you’re done, pull the stick out and throw it away. Our how to use IQOS ILUMA i guide has the full routine.
Which sticks work in ILUMA i?
Only TEREA. IQOS says ILUMA devices are made to be used with TEREA sticks, and TEREA is made only for ILUMA.
It works the other way round too. IQOS warns against using ILUMA devices or TEREA sticks with previous IQOS generations, since that may damage the device. So an old IQOS and a new ILUMA i each need their own sticks.

Any TEREA stick goes in any ILUMA i. ONE, Standard and PRIME all take the same sticks. So you can switch devices later and keep your favourite flavour.

All three heat TEREA the same way. The difference is in the build, how many sessions you get in a row and how you charge them.

What do Touch Screen, Pause Mode and FlexPuff do?
They’re small comfort features. None of them changes which sticks you can use.
On ILUMA i, the screen tells you what’s left. Two dashes mean up to 3 more uses on the Holder, and one dash means up to 2. A ring of light round the screen counts down your session.
Need to stop halfway? That’s Pause Mode. IQOS says you can start it within the first 3 minutes or 8 puffs. After 8 minutes paused, the Holder turns off.
FlexPuff may give you 4 extra puffs. It’s on by default on new devices and you manage it in the IQOS app. It needs Performance Mode, and it won’t kick in if you’ve paused.

What is IQOS ILUMA used for?
It’s used to heat TEREA tobacco sticks. Only adults who already use tobacco or nicotine should use it. It won’t take any other stick.
Do HEETS work with IQOS ILUMA i?
No. IQOS says ILUMA devices are designed for TEREA sticks only. HEETS were made for older IQOS devices.
Does ILUMA i need cleaning like older IQOS?
No. IQOS says so itself: no blade, no cleaning. So there’s no blade to scrape and nothing to brush out.
